Resin Selection
Resin determines chemical resistance, temperature range, fire performance, and ATEX suitability. Enclosure resins must also meet electrical insulation and surface resistivity requirements per IEC 60079-0 for hazardous area use.
IP · ATEX · NEMA — Full Certification Guide
FRP enclosures are uniquely positioned to meet IP66/IP67, ATEX, and NEMA 4X simultaneously — where steel boxes corrode and lose their IP rating in 2–5 years, GRP maintains its seal for the lifetime of the installation.
ATEX Marking Explained — How to Read the Nameplate
| Marking Element | Meaning | Example Values | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ⊛ Ex | Equipment is ATEX certified for explosive atmosphere | ⊛ II 2G Ex eb IIC T6 Gb | Full marking must appear on nameplate |
| II | Equipment Group II — surface industries (not mines) | II | Group I = mining; Group II = all other industries |
| 2G | Category 2 (Zone 1 suitable) · G = Gas/vapour | 2G (Zone 1) · 3G (Zone 2) · 1G (Zone 0) | Category = safety level; G = gas present |
| Ex e / Ex eb | Increased safety protection type | Ex e · Ex eb (enhanced) · Ex d (flameproof) · Ex p (purged) | Ex-e most common for FRP junction boxes |
| IIC / IIB / IIA | Gas group — defines MESG (max. experimental safe gap) | IIC = H₂, C₂H₂ · IIB = C₂H₄ · IIA = propane | IIC = most ignition-prone. IIC enclosures valid for all groups. |
| T6 / T5 / T4 | Temperature class — max. surface temperature | T6 = 85°C · T5 = 100°C · T4 = 135°C · T3 = 200°C | Must be below auto-ignition temp of the gas present |
| Gb | Equipment Protection Level (EPL) — Gas, level b | Ga (very high) · Gb (high — Zone 1) · Gc (enhanced — Zone 2) | EPL added since IEC 60079-0:2011 |
| Anti-static | Surface resistivity ≤10⁹ Ω for IIC group | EN 60079-0 Cl.7.4 requirement | FRP surface must be treated / coated. Cannot use standard ISO resin for IIC Zone 1 without anti-static surface. |
Applications — Key Sectors
FRP/GRP enclosures eliminate the corrosion, rusting, and IP-rating degradation that affect painted steel and galvanised enclosures within 3–7 years in aggressive industrial environments.
FRP/GRP Enclosure vs. Alternatives
FRP/GRP enclosures cost more upfront than steel but deliver lower whole-life cost in corrosive environments where steel and aluminium enclosures require frequent inspection and replacement.
